The Call of the Loon

Time for your narrator to head up north where the lakes are clear and the mosquitoes look at tourists like Tantalus ogling a fruit salad at the local farmer’s market. While I enjoy a bit of well-deserved R & R - fishing, water-skiing, hitting the ice cream parlor - I’ll try to do a little vacation-blogging.

But not too much.

P.S. I do a really mean loon call - anyone else out there good at this?

  1. I have no idea how or why I happened upon your blog spot but after reading through a few of your mini-journals I felt the need to respond.

I am a professional writer, fictional novelist and yes I am published many times over.
In one of your postings you mentioned being slushed by publishers. It shocked me. May I make a suggestion?
    Try PMA in N.Y.N.Y.
The big honcho is named Peter Miller, call before you query and do some boasting about yourself. Peter has had a few serious bouts of cardiac crisis as it were and telling him up front that you are a physician (regardless of NOT being a cardiologist) he will melt like a yellow M&M in the sweating palm of your hand.
You should be published. You have a beautiful and melodic way with words.
Peter is a nutcase in many ways but the one good thing (actually it’s the only good thing) is his ability to seek out talent and promote the hell out of it. He is the real thing in a business that shitty at best.
By the way…I smoke and your essay on smoking has iced me to the core. Unfortunately there are few ‘healthy’ writers, most either drink, smoke and drug themselves into an early grave. We creative creatures have a difficult time establishing normal boundaries in a world of chain link fences.
Enough prattling and rattling…call Peter Miller Agency.

    As ever,

    Saint M

  3. I lived in Traverse City, Michigan, near a small lake. The loons used to fly over my house in the early am and again around dusk calling that eerie call.
the first time I saw a loon, I was kayaking, and a loon suddenly emerged from the water next to me, calling out a warning, as I soon realized there was a nest and babies nearby. I hadn’t known I was in the nest area, and just quietly watched and glided by. Quite an amazing experience.
